This was a great article I found on the late designer Madame Grès. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

“I wanted to be a sculptor,” pioneering couturière Madame Grès once remarked. “For me, it’s the same thing to work in fabric or in stone.”

Luckily for us, she opted for the softer of the two, and over the course of her fifty year career, rewrote the rules of elegance, eschewing traditional corseting for her signature draping. The sensual simplicity that marked her designs hinged on her ability to manipulate fabrics—twisting, braiding, billowing and draping—into fluid shapes that enhanced the female form without obscuring it.

Her signature style was born when she designed Hellenic costumes for Jean Giradoux’s play La Guerre de Troie n’aura pas lieu (The Trojan War Will Not Take Place) in 1935, and she continued to reference the Greek aesthetic when she opened her design house, Grès,true religion jeans wholesale, in 1942.

Madame Grès quickly made a name for herself as Paris’s most meticulous designer of haute couture, and over the years, her dedication to her craft attracted celebrity clients including Greta Garbo, Vivien Leigh, Dolores del Rio and Jackie Kennedy.

A couturière through and through, she long resisted industry pressure to establish a ready-to-wear line (which she deemed a “prostitution”), preferring to work with individual clients on customized designs.

The facts of her life remain murky. Given her sculptural background, it’s fitting that 84 of Madame Grès’s designs (culled from the Musée Galliera and various private collections) are currently on display at the Musée Bourdelle‘s “Madame Grès: La Couture à l’Oeuvre” exhibit in Paris, alongside works by sculptor Emile-Antoine Bourdelle.

A turn through the exhibit (which also includes 50 original editorial photographs and numerous original sketches) demonstrates both the breadth of Grès’s work and her adherence to a theme. From her early neoclassic gowns of the ’40s to her more experimental use of cut-outs in the ‘70s and ‘80s, she remained true to her purpose. Every stitch, every pleat, every twist of fabric sings with integrity, with purpose,true religion jeans fat girl, with deep comprehension of the female form.

A craftswoman of the highest order, Madame Grès’s looks epitomized both feminine grace and supreme versatility. Any given dress could just as easily be worn by a contemporary starlet or an ancient Greek goddess, and therein lies the true value of her vision. London Trip

This must be the most-photographed view of the new British Library. But it was such a beautiful day, and the building looked so striking against the clear blue sky,true religion jeans on sale, that I just couldn’t resist. I went to see the Royal Manuscripts exhibition which was very beautiful, but very busy. I got a bit tired of having to peep over other people’s shoulders, so I left after about an hour and went up to the Treasures of the British Library gallery instead. Much cooler, much quieter, and still full of beautiful things.

While I was there I wandered over to the conservation centre, where they have a little exhibition that I hadn’t seen. I was surprised to find that I actually knew almost everything the exhibition had to show me. I always feel as though there’s more I can learn about almost everything, so sometimes it takes me by surprise to discover that I already know more than I think!

In the afternoon I met up with a friend who’d been in a meeting just around the corner from the Grant Museum. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go in again, and was excited to discover that we’d arrived on their birthday! Yes, we did sign the card and fill in the quiz. Jo loved the museum – although frankly who wouldn’t love a place with a skeleton in a party hat?

I had every intention of taking lots of artistic photos, but Jo and I were so busy going around pointing at exciting things that I failed miserably. I did like this one though – another ingenious bit of labelling on an elephant’s heart.

As if Jo wasn’t already excited enough about the preserved infant manatee, she was thrilled to bits when I gave her a gift of manatee socks! The manatee looks suitably impressed, I think. Probably jealous. Jo’s going to visit manatees in Singapore soon, as well as meeting orangutans in Borneo. Now I’m jealous!

Despite leaving London just after 5, it was getting dark by the time I walked home from the station. The lake was misty as the sun set, so I took the opportunity to snap a picture. Quite a contrast to the blue sky over London!

Adventure aside, this is my honeymoon we are talking about. So, a romantic evening out with my new husband was a must,wholesale true religion jeans! One of the never ending quests here at Be Stylish is finding that little style item that makes all the difference. Most of the times, that item is a small accessory that brings a drop of color in an otherwise dull outfit. But what kind of accessory can make us men stand out in a subtle way?

You can try a scarf, you can try a pendant or a leather bracelet. But the manliest men’s accessory of all that I recommend you try is, of course, the watch.

A watch is not used to tell time anymore. Those days are long gone. In a world of mobile phones, smartphones and tablets, the watch is like a dinosaur fossil: it has no practical use yet everyone admires it.
